Why are estuaries included in a freshwater plan change?

Bay of Plenty Regional Council must take an integrated approach to freshwater management. Ki uta ki tai, from mountains to oceans. This means that in some catchments, freshwater rules are being updated to support the health of the estuaries at the bottom of these catchments.

Estuaries are the last stop for freshwater before the ocean, they are greatly influenced by the freshwater that flows into them and what this water carries, such as sediment and nutrients. We must take measures to recognise the interconnectedness of the whole environment.
